Ripped through the Headlines: exactly just What Went Horribly incorrect in legislation & Order

On February 11, 2015, legislation & Order SVU aired an episode “ripped through the headlines” of GamerGate, dedicated to the harassment of feminists in video video video gaming and having a character that is central transparently drawn from components of Anita Sarkeesian, Zoe Quinn, and Brianna Wu. This might be its tale.

I would like to start with stating that in university I became a die-hard fan of legislation & Order, both the old series that is original SVU, and viewed each day. Brand brand New episodes, re-runs on TNT, you identify it. It had been a ritual for my roommate that is freshman-year and after dinner. We have hot feelings that are fuzzy legislation & Order. Or at the least used to do.

The episode starts with a discussion between Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and her specialist by which Olivia covers the gender-typical behavior that is“boy” of newly used son, Noah. Noah apparently is a breaker-of-toys-and-teapots, destroyer of bookshelves, and generally an all-around “boy, ” something about which both Olivia plus the therapist laugh.

And my hackles are usually up. This “boys is supposed to be boys” types of attitude – although the episode will not actually condone such excuses – is highly problematic, and supplying it as a good ghost of reason for outlandish and improper behavior only exacerbates the flagrant problems our culture already has with harmful sex stereotypes (against guys, females, and other-gendered people).

Needless to say, through the episode, we need to keep finding its way back to Noah and exactly how Olivia is concerned that “this is their future. ” Yes, because no-one would ever desire their kid to cultivate around be considered a gamer that is dirty.
